The study was oriented towards two major aims: to describe the similarities and differences in the nature of teaching in classrooms in different countries and to identify the teaching behaviors associated with greater student achievement.The study was longitudinal, with student learning outcomes measured at two points in time.

The purpose of the study was to examine science achievement and its correlates in the participating countries and to study trends in science achievement from the first testing, which took place in 1970–1971. The student tests were developed for the three age groups of students and included a number of science topics. For each topic, three types of activities were tested: - knowledge - understanding of a principle and - application of information and principles to solve a practical problem. The science test was complemented by questionnaires for students, teachers, and school principals.

The study focused on three fields of science: biology, chemistry, and physics. The data were collected shortly after the introduction in many countries of reforms in science education. Thus, the study was concerned not only with achievement across the domain of science, but also with attitudes, methods of teaching, the development of practical skills, and an understanding of the nature of science. The data were collected in 1970–1971.

IMST ist ein vom BMUKK in Kooperation mit Universitäten, Pädagogischen Hochschulen, Schulen etc. getragenes Projekt in Österreich, mit dem der Unterricht in Mathematik, Naturwissenschaften und Informatik sowie verwandten Fächern verbessert wird.
IMST arbeitet in vier Programmen (Regionale und Thematische Netzwerke, Fonds für Unterrichts- und Schulentwicklung, Gender Netzwerk, Prüfungskultur) auf den Ebenen des Unterrichts, der Schulentwicklung und des gesamten Bildungssystems, evaluiert systematisch die Aktivitäten und integriert in allen Bereichen Gender Sensitivity und Gender Mainstreaming.
Die Website enthält u.a. ein Wiki für Lehrer/innen und andere Interessierte, in welchem sich ein reichhaltiger Fundus interessanter Arbeiten zu den Bereichen Unterrichts- und Schulentwicklungsinnovationen (insbesondere aus den Fächern Mathematik, Naturwissenschaften und Informatik – aber auch aus zahlreichen anderen Fächern) findet.
