The purpose of the study was to examine science achievement and its correlates in the participating countries and to study trends in science achievement from the first testing, which took place in 1970–1971. The student tests were developed for the three age groups of students and included a number of science topics. For each topic, three types of activities were tested: - knowledge - understanding of a principle and - application of information and principles to solve a practical problem. The science test was complemented by questionnaires for students, teachers, and school principals.

Physik für Kids ist ein Projekt an der Universität Oldenburg, das im Sommersemester 1999 gegründet wurde. This study was conducted to investigate the outcomes of various school systems in a field of schooling that was, at this time, undergoing various reforms in many countries. So-called “New Mathematics”, resulting from the international agreement on what essential new material should be included in the curriculum, had been introduced in some educational systems. FIMS research questions related to the organization of education, the curriculum, and methods of instruction. The study also examined how mathematics teaching and learning might be influenced by societal, scientific, and technological change. The data were collected in 1964.

The study examined mathematics education at three levels: curricular intentions, implemented curriculum, and student achievement. Student performance was measured and reported separately for five areas: - arithmetic - algebra - geometry - measurement - statistics. The study included some features that involved a replication of the First International Mathematics Study (FIMS). It also incorporated a detailed longitudinal component designed to investigate causal relationships between the output and input measures of mathematics education.

Das `digitale Schulbuch` startete im Mai 2002 als ein Pilotprojekt der Senatsschulverwaltung Berlin, des Landesinstituts für Schule und Medien (LISUM) Berlin und des Schulbuchverlages Volk und Wissen in den Klassen fünf und sechs. Um Lehrende zu unterstützen, neue Wege im Mathematikunterricht zu gehen, wird ihnen die Lernumgebung www.mathe-plus.de angeboten, die auf einem veränderten Konzept von Lehren und Lernen basiert. Sie richtet damit den Blick auf die aktuellen Anforderungen an einen zeitgemäßen Mathematikunterricht. Digitale Medien werden als additives Werkzeug auf eine natürliche Weise und zur Unterstützung von Lehr- und Lernprozessen einbezogen. Mathe-plus.de besteht aus einem Schulbuch mit ergänzenden Online-Modulen. Die Ausstattung der Schulen mit und ohne Internetzugängen berücksichtigend, wird die Online-Plattform ebenfalls auf einer CD abgebildet. Material steht zum Download zur Verfügung.
Die Website soll Schüler und interessierte Laien in die Prinzipien der Katalyse einführen und Lehrern Anregungen geben, wie das Thema in der Schule behandelt werden kann. Bei der Zusammenstellung der Experimente wurde darauf geachtet, dass sie in ihrer Gesamtheit nicht nur die Prinzipien der Katalyse verdeutlichen, sondern vor allem auch für den Einsatz in der Schule geeignet sind.
The study focused on three fields of science: biology, chemistry, and physics. The data were collected shortly after the introduction in many countries of reforms in science education. Thus, the study was concerned not only with achievement across the domain of science, but also with attitudes, methods of teaching, the development of practical skills, and an understanding of the nature of science. The data were collected in 1970–1971.
